The Abingdon Lions were out doing our bit for our community. We helped out with the litter pick in South Abingdon and we are hoping to help out with the next one.
Let us know if you would like our help with any community projects

As members of Lions Clubs International, we have a global network of 1.4 million volunteers. When a humanitarian crisis strikes, Lions Clubs International Foundation work with and are guided by their own Lions members who are ordinary people present on the ground. As the World’s largest voluntary, non-governmental organisation, our volunteers fundraise in their own local communities, with every penny raised being used to help those in need. We don’t spend money on fancy fundraising campaigns, all our administration and marketing costs are funded by members’ subs. It can prove difficult providing aid but we are committed not to wasting the money entrusted to Lions by the public and ensuring it can genuinely help victims of a disaster. Lions Clubs of the British Isles are very grateful for the public support, which enables us to commit to solving long-term problems through our presence in local communities throughout the world. Every Lions Club supports a range of good causes and local projects in its area where you can get involved.
Abingdon Lions raise money in the community to help good causes within the community.
Our maijn fundraising event of the year is Santa’s Sleigh Run and this year we were able to raise over £3,000 which will find it’s way to good causes in the Abingdon area over the next year. We couldn’t get Santa out in his sleigh without the help of our friends in other local charities, to recognise that Abingdon Lions presented donation cheques to these hard-working organisations:
. Santa’s Chief Helper & our Membership Secretary Lesley Donovan presented the cheques:
Wherever you live, work or travel across the British Isles and Ireland, you are likely to come across members of Lions clubs and the projects we support. From Abingdon to Aberdeen, Yarm to Yeovil, we cover the points of the compass and letters of the alphabet. To support good causes in the local area, we need to raise funds and we try to do that while having a bit of fun too. If you attended Abingdon’s Dragon Boat Festival on 4th September, chances are we helped you park your car, maybe sold you a Tombola ticket and for a few of you, presented you with the gorgeous cuddly Lion you won or offered you consolation prize. Many thanks to every one that supported us and helped raise over £200 for local good causes.
An Abingdon community group is searching for their very own Rudolf to help transport Santa this Christmas. For many years, Santa’s Sleigh Ride has become an annual tradition which the Abingdon Lions Club have organised for many years. But this year’s event is under threat as the Club need to find a vehicle to transport Santa around the local estates over a 10-night period in December. Lions President Ron Skinner said “: “Children queue up to see Santa. It’s very popular and families enjoy the sleigh travelling round the estates. It would be a real shame if we had to stop.” Last year’s Santa Tour raised over £3,000 which the Abingdon Lions Club distribute amongst local organisations and good causes.
“We need a vehicle that can tow Santa or perhaps a small flatbed truck that can carry the sleigh for 2-3 hours each night of the tour” added Ron, “we’re not looking for a commitment to all 10 nights, although that would be great, just helping us out for 1 evening would make a big difference. We’re open to ideas and help from members of the public or the local business community to keep this great tradition going. ”

Lions Message in a Bottle is a simple, but effective, way to keep essential personal and medical details where they can be found in an emergency – the fridge.
More than 5 million FREE Message in a Bottle kits have been distributed by Lions Clubs British Isles & Ireland in recent years to people with conditions such as diabetes, allergies, disabilities and life-threatening illnesses. The bottles are supplied FREE of charge thanks to generous donations from the public and businesses.
Lions clubs supply the bottles to health centres, doctors’ surgeries and chemists. They are also available direct from Lions clubs – contact us for more information. Paramedics, police, fire-fighters and social services support this life-saving initiative and know to look in the fridge when they see the Lions Message in a Bottle stickers.
We’ve been in the Oxford Mail this week – handing over our 7th Defibrillator which will be located in Abingdon town centre. Read the article by following this link here
Whether its victims are young or old, at work or shopping, exercising or just walking, a sudden cardiac arrest is a serious threat to life – early use of a defibrillator can help save lives. In fact, it’s proven to be the only effective treatment for ventricular fibrillation (VF), a potentially fatal heart rhythm associated with Cardiac Arrest. Abingdon Lions are committed to helping to create a safer environment for their local community by providing defibrillators in places of likely need.
